Calculating text width

This worked better for me:

$.fn.textWidth = function(){
  var html_org = $(this).html();
  var html_calc="<span>" + html_org + '</span>';
  $(this).html(html_calc);
  var width = $(this).find('span:first').width();
  $(this).html(html_org);
  return width;
};
