How do I debug an MPI program?

I have found gdb quite useful. I use it as

mpirun -np <NP> xterm -e gdb ./program

This the launches xterm windows in which I can do

run <arg1> <arg2> ... <argN>

usually works fine

You can also package these commands together using:

mpirun -n <NP> xterm -hold -e gdb -ex run --args ./program [arg1] [arg2] [...]
