How to assign the output of a Bash command to a variable? [duplicate]

Try:

pwd=`pwd`

or

pwd=$(pwd)

Notice no spaces after the equals sign.

Also as Mr. Weiss points out; you don’t assign to $pwd, you assign to pwd.
