I had this issue. I imported MatFormFieldModule at my main module, but forgot to add MatInputModule to the imports array, like so:

import { MatFormFieldModule, MatInputModule } from '@angular/material';

@NgModule({
    imports: [
        MatFormFieldModule,
        MatInputModule
    ]
})
export class AppModule { }
