Two solutions for this:

  1. PHP function nl2br():

    e.g.,

    echo nl2br("This\r\nis\n\ra\nstring\r");

// will output
This<br />
is<br />
a<br />
string<br />

  2. Wrap the input in <pre></pre> tags.
