If you are using RC5 then import this: 

import { CommonModule } from '@angular/common';  
import { BrowserModule } from '@angular/platform-browser';

and be sure to import CommonModule from the module that is providing your component.

 @NgModule({
    imports: [CommonModule],
    declarations: [MyComponent]
  ...
})
class MyComponentModule {}
