How to add a footer to the UITableView?

I’m specifically seeing in my code that 

self.theTable.tableFooterView = tableFooter;

works and 

[self.theTable.tableFooterView addSubview:tableFooter];

does not work. So stick to the former and look elsewhere for the possible bug.
