How to profile methods in Scala?

Do you want to do this without changing the code that you want to measure timings for? If you don’t mind changing the code, then you could do something like this:

def time[R](block: => R): R = {
    val t0 = System.nanoTime()
    val result = block    // call-by-name
    val t1 = System.nanoTime()
    println("Elapsed time: " + (t1 - t0) + "ns")
    result
}

// Now wrap your method calls, for example change this...
val result = 1 to 1000 sum

// ... into this
val result = time { 1 to 1000 sum }
