Naming threads and thread-pools of ExecutorService

Guava almost always has what you need. 

ThreadFactory namedThreadFactory = 
  new ThreadFactoryBuilder().setNameFormat("my-sad-thread-%d").build()

and pass it off to your ExecutorService.
